What each form step does
Every setting in the form builder, step by step, and the ones worth changing first.
The builder's steps follow the donor's path. Here's what each one controls.
Details
The form's own setup: its name, the campaign its gifts count towards, the display mode (stepped or single page), the primary color and the recurring heart color, and which side the content panel sits on. Leave colors blank to inherit your organization's branding.
Amount
The most important step, because it's where most donors decide.
- Amount entry: a single fund, a fund the donor picks, or a list of funds.
- Giving handles: your suggested amounts, set separately for one-time and recurring giving, with one preselected.
- Frequency: whether to allow one-time gifts, recurring gifts, or both, and whether donors see the choice at all.
- Limits: a minimum, a cap, and whether decimals are allowed.
- Donor touches: give in honor of someone, collect the honoree's email so they can be told, a personal message, and a comment.
Set your suggested amounts from what people actually give, not round numbers. Your average gift plus a nudge upward is a better second button than $100.
Upsell
The one-time-to-recurring prompt: after a donor picks a one-time amount, Givable can ask whether they'd make it monthly.
You control the heading, the message, and which monthly amount is suggested for each one-time range. Donors who already chose recurring skip it automatically.
Turn it off with Enable the upsell step if it doesn't suit your audience.
Donor
What you ask for:
- Name and email are always collected and can't be turned off. Everything else is your choice.
- Address, optional or required. Ask only if you need it, for example for receipts by post.
- Individual or organization, when companies give through your form.
- Donor login, so returning donors can sign in, have their details filled in, and reuse a saved payment method.
- Anonymous giving and a GDPR consent checkbox.
Every extra field costs you completions. Ask for what you'll genuinely use.
Matching
Looks up whether the donor's employer matches gifts, using the Double the Donation integration. You can scope it to the United States and Canada or to all countries.
This step only appears when your organization has that integration connected.
Questions
Your own questions, chosen from your organization's question library, and you can write new ones without leaving the builder.
Each question is placed before payment or after payment, and can be required, or hidden and filled in from the link.
Put questions after payment where you can. A question between a donor and the donate button costs gifts; the same question on the thank-you screen usually still gets answered.
Payment
- Payment methods for this form. Leave it alone and the form uses your organization's defaults. PayPal and Venmo appear once PayPal is connected.
- Currency: the default, which others are accepted, and whether donors can switch.
- Cover fees: whether to offer it, the wording, whether the box starts ticked, the percentage and fixed amount per method, and a maximum.
- Saving payment methods, so donors can reuse a card next time.
Thank you
What happens after paying: your heading and message, whether to show a recurring summary, social share buttons, a link into the donor portal, or your own button. You can also redirect to a page on your own site.
The thank-you screen is the most-read page you own. Say what the gift does next, rather than only "thank you".
Content
The story column beside the form: a heading, a message, an image or video, and footer links. It's also where social proof lives:
- A donation thermometer towards a goal
- A donor count
- A recent donations ticker
- An impact card
- A countdown timer
Behavior
The captcha setting, which protects your form from automated card testing. Leave it on: the cost of a stolen-card attack on a donation form is chargeback fees and a frozen processor account.
Analytics
Send events to Google Tag Manager: form viewed, amount selected, donor info completed, payment info added, donation succeeded, upsell accepted. It stays switched off until your organization connects Google Tag Manager.
If you have supporters in the EU or EEA, turn on the GDPR consent checkbox under Donor before sending analytics events.
